Polyester and performance fabrics are everywhere in modern wardrobes — especially for gym wear and active T-shirts. They’re durable, quick-drying, and wrinkle-resistant. But they have one big downside: they can trap odors if not washed correctly. Here’s how to keep polyester fresh and clean.

1. Why Polyester Holds Odors
Polyester is a synthetic fiber with a tighter structure than cotton. It doesn’t absorb sweat the same way, so body oils and bacteria tend to sit on the surface and get trapped in the fabric.
2. Sort & Turn Inside Out
Wash polyester tees and hoodies with similar synthetic fabrics. Turn them inside out to help water and detergent reach the areas that touch your skin.
3. Use Cold or Warm Water – Not Hot
Cold or lukewarm water is ideal. Hot water can set odors and damage any elastic or technical finishes in performance fabrics.
4. Choose the Right Detergent
- Use a detergent designed for sportswear or “odor defense”.
- Avoid heavy softeners and strong fragrances — they coat fibers and trap bacteria.
5. Add Vinegar or Baking Soda for Odor Control
- Add ½ cup of white vinegar in the rinse cycle to neutralize odors.
- Add 2–3 tablespoons of baking soda to the wash cycle for extra deodorizing.
6. Avoid Overdrying
Polyester dries quickly. Overdrying in a hot dryer can damage fibers and cause static. Use low heat or air-dry on a hanger.
7. Never Iron on High Heat
Polyester can melt or get shiny marks under a hot iron. If needed, use a low synthetic setting or a steamer instead.
8. When to Retire an Old Polyester Tee
If odor returns immediately after washing or the fabric feels waxy, the fibers may be saturated with body oils. It may be time to replace heavily used gym tees.

Final Thought: For polyester, focus less on heat and more on fighting bacteria — that’s the real source of odor.
